ShareMap: Map Based Collaboration
Benefits
The ShareMap service is designed to augment existing CAD/GIS business processes. By taking existing project information and providing it to all users, a collaboration platform is created.
- Provide map creation in an Internet browser to all project participants
- Allow drawing and placing text on a map to facilitate collaboration
- Visual overview to all project consultants
- Reduce duplication through visual collaboration (Estimated 10% cost savings in planning/design stages)
- Project participants have access as and when required without the need to contact and distract other project consultants.
- Can be used to provide project consultants and other stakeholders secure and role limited access
- Rapid Deployment
- Consistent location reference framework for management queries
- Ability to capture time spliced views of physical changes for later reference. e.g. Environmental, Maintenance issues
The result is an increased visual nature to communication which yields efficiency gains through reduced need for clarification. Project areas can create separate working maps with the information that is relevant to their business unit. Two examples are:
- Environmental management which can visually track the status of environmental requirements and reduce reporting overhead.
- Community consultation teams can relate to wider community by visualising the property when responding to enquiries
SDX provides ShareMap as a hosted service which reduces the overhead of developing, supporting and maintaining internal systems. Map based collaboration is not a substitute for complex GIS analysis and CAD drawings. These are the domain of GIS and Engineering departments. Map based collaboration facilitates timely communication among a myriad of personnel both inside and outside a project ,including non-technical people. It seeks to release GIS resource from the need for responding to such queries and provide an easy spatial reference system for their work.
